Nanowire and cylinder cross-sections

Questions & answers

How does light scatter from a cylinder or nanowire?

An infinitely long cylinder is solved exactly by the cylindrical analogue of Mie theory. Its cross-sections are given per unit length (an area per length, i.e. a width), and they depend strongly on the polarization: electric field along the axis or across it.

What is the difference between the two polarizations?

With the electric field along the wire, metal wires behave like their bulk metal and show no plasmon; with the field across the wire, metal wires show a localized plasmon. Dielectric wires show Mie resonances in both.

Can I model core–shell nanowires?

Yes: add shells around the core, for example an oxide layer on a metal wire or a semiconductor core–shell wire.
