Cylinder on a substrate

Questions & answers

Why model a nanowire on a substrate?

Real nanowires lie on glass, silicon or metal. The substrate reflects light back onto the wire, shifts its resonances and creates a gap field at the contact; the calculator includes it exactly for any angle and polarization.

What happens for a metal wire on a metal film?

A small gap between the wire and the film forms a gap plasmon with a very strong field in the gap, the two-dimensional analogue of a particle-on-mirror.

Can I change the gap and angle of incidence?

Yes: set the wire–substrate gap, the angle of incidence and the polarization, and compare the field maps.
