Single cylinder (nanowire) near field

Questions & answers

How is the near field of a nanowire computed?

From the exact solution for an infinite cylinder: the field inside and outside the wire, for light polarized along or across the axis, with optional shells.

Where is the field strongest around a metal nanowire?

With light polarized across the wire, at the two sides facing the polarization, like a two-dimensional version of a sphere's plasmon lobes. With polarization along the axis the field stays weak near metal.

When is the infinite-cylinder model good?

When the wire is much longer than both its diameter and the wavelength: the field near the middle of a long wire is then the same as for an infinite one. For short rods use the spheroid calculators.
