Spheroid in a focused beam

Questions & answers

Why put a nanorod in a focused beam?

Tightly focused beams, as in optical tweezers or confocal microscopes, have strong field components along the axis; a nanorod responds very differently to them than to a plane wave, depending on its orientation in the focus.

Which beams can I use?

A focused laser of any numerical aperture with linear, circular, radial or azimuthal polarization, with the particle anywhere around the focus.

How is the focus computed?

From vector diffraction theory, valid up to the highest numerical apertures, expanded into the spheroid's multipoles and solved with its exact T-matrix.
